Our task was to learn how to render dark pigments effectively, to be explicit about the nuanced types of black available to us in oil paint, and to exploit their chemical properties to deliver the most convincing shadows, background versus foreground. My first attempt was unsuccessful in my view, but this one turned out better I think. This blue beauty feels soulful to me, like all horses.

Wistful Bear
This bear appealed to me in her sweet downward expression, and I loved the challenge of using warm blacks and purples to give more dimension and interest. I also loved the nuanced of browns in areas like the ears. “That was the best salmon I’ve EVER had… I might need to go for seconds,” could be on this bear’s mind, or is she missing her cubs? We cannot pretend to know that such sentiments don’t exist for these creatures.
As it suggests, one color is the focus of this study was YELLOW and WOW was it a challenge to get so many shades and layers within one surface. This sleeping angel was a real learning experience!
This little dreamer might need a pal to snuggle with, or maybe his snoozy vibe just gives your day some ease.

Wonderful lesson on a technique known as radiant underpainting. This is some heavenly place in Tuscany.
SOARING TORTOISE
So Grand! Oh So Elegant. This style of painting was so massively demanding I will probably never rise to the feat of doing it again! The lesson was called indirect painting —my hat’s off to any and all who practice this form of painting. I am grateful for the learning and this as the evidence of what I managed to grasp. This floating majesty lives on a 18 x 24 stretched canvas and was done entirely in oils.
